Answering Your Questions
Why should I choose concrete for my countertops?
Choosing concrete as the warm and natural element for your countertops allows you
the flexibility to be creative with your design, offering your home a distinctive,
one-of-a-kind look. Although concrete has the look and feel of stone, our experienced
craftsmen can embed other materials such as copper, iron, steel, tile and seashells
into the mold, making your countertops not only beautiful, but also unique. You
also have the option of inlaying trivets, drain boards, cutting boards, soap dishes
and ice buckets directly into your countertops. In addition, we offer multiple edging
alternatives such as beveled, rounded, chamfered, and quarter-round. Welcome in
all areas of the home, concrete is also used for fireplace hearths and mantles,
as well as for tables, vanities and islands.
How are my concrete countertops made?
Our craftsmen will measure your countertops on-site, and then return to the shop
where the molds are custom built. Your countertops are reinforced using steel and
wire mesh. The concrete is poured and allowed to set for several days before the
molds are removed. The concrete products can then be stained, ground to expose the
aggregate and polished, or simply polished without grinding. Lastly, the countertops
are sealed and waxed, leaving a smooth and durable surface. From measurement to
installation the entire process generally takes four to six weeks. More time may
be necessary depending on the time required to obtain sinks and fixtures.
How thick can you make my countertops?
We can cast your countertops from 1 ½” to 3” thick. We can also provide additional
aesthetic and functional options such as rear rolled edges for ease of cleaning
or deep front edges for a bolder look. The weight of the countertop will vary with
thickness. A 1 ½” thick countertop weighs approximately 18 pounds per square foot.
Can you cast bathroom countertops and other fixtures in concrete?
Yes, we can cast bathroom vanity tops, sinks, fireplace hearths, mantles and surrounds,
tables, cooking surfaces and exterior fixtures.
What are my color options?
We offer over ten solid colors in our palette. We also offer many stains that can be used to color the surfaces of your concrete.
How are my countertops installed?
Installation ordinarily takes less than one day and the underlying structure will
determine whether your old countertops need to be removed or if the stone can be
placed directly on top of your existing countertops. You may remove your own countertops
and sink or we will provide professional contractors who will do the job for you.
What seam treatments do you offer?
Depending on the size of your countertop, seams may be necessary. Seams are barely
visible at 1/16” to 1/8” wide, and may be accentuated with design mediums such as
brass, stainless steel or other inlays. Seams may also be filled with colored resins
that match your countertop color.
Are my countertops stain resistant?
Our sealer will protect your countertops from many stains, and with minimal maintenance
should resist most stains. Certain acidic liquids such as red wine, lemon juice
and vinegar will stain the concrete if not wiped up immediately. We recommend all
spills be cleaned as soon as possible.
Will my countertops be durable?
Concrete corners may chip if struck with a hard object. Our sealer will help protect
the countertops from chipping. Hairline cracks may occur on rare occasion, but cracks
are never structural in nature.
Can you cast cutting surfaces in my countertops?
Yes, we can install cutting surfaces of your choice in convenient areas of your
countertop.
Can you install trivets in my countertops?
Yes, we can install decorative and functional trivets for hot plates or abrasive
stoneware. (The trivets can be installed near your stove, sink or any place within
your countertop surface.)
Can I use my existing sink?
You may use your existing sink. We also offer pre-cast concrete sinks that match
your countertops. Depending on your preference, we can install either an overlay
or undermount sink.
How do I maintain my countertops?
Simply clean your countertops with mild detergent and water. Avoid abrasive cleaners
as they may etch or dull your surface. Every three to six months, apply carnauba
wax (a car wax found in many stores) to your countertops adding luster and a layer
of protection to the stone. In addition, you may choose from a variety of protectors
and sealers to choose from depending on your desired finish. Taking proper care
of your countertops will ensure a beautiful appearance for many years to come!
Do the countertops come with a warranty?
Our countertops are guaranteed against defective workmanship for one year after
the installation date. We will repair countertop damage not related to workmanship
or after the warranty period for a nominal fee.
